“No Margin, No Mission” (00:50)

Business strategy is about taming the profit cycle, according to Harvard economist and New Marketplace Lead Advisor Leemore Dafny. This applies to health care as much as to any other business. You might say, “We’re not about profits, we’re about mission,” says Dafny. “And to that I would say: to achieve your mission, you need a bottom line.” In other words, “no margin, no mission.”

“In order to get our health care system to deliver the quality we want at a cost we can afford, we have got to consider this cycle,” says Dafny, “and we’ve got to focus on creating value.”
